Dr Beth Newstead, Consultant Emergency Medicine, was one of the first people in the UK to gain a qualification in Lifestyle Medicine.
“Lifestyle Medicine is about maintaining health rather than treating disease. It can help you make changes in all areas of your life (diet, exercise, sleep and stress/ anxiety management) in order to keep you as well as possible. Lifestyle medicine works alongside usual medical care.
NHS staff are vulnerable to particular stressors such as shift work, long hours and stressful working conditions. We are also notoriously bad at prioritising our own health. Lifestyle Medicine can help us to start looking after ourselves in an evidence-based and achievable way.”
Beth shares her top tips for staying well this festive season below:
- Get some day light every day
- Go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day
- Fast for 12 hours each day
- Incorporate some more movement in your day
- Accept imperfection
