Monday 27 January was a major milestone for UHP as a Major Trauma Centre. Chairman James Brent and Interim Chief Executive Mark Hackett officially opened Moorgate as the new major trauma ward on Level 4, Derriford Hospital.
Major trauma is defined as an injury or combination of injuries that are life-threatening and could be life changing because it may result in long-term disability.
Many years in the making and a first for Derriford Hospital, this achievement is a result of a long-standing commitment by everyone in the major trauma team, with thanks to the support of the Executive team also. The creation of the ward with 16 beds designated specifically for patients who present as major trauma cases will greatly improve the quality of care that can be delivered, together with improvements in patient safety, outcomes and experience. As one of only 27 Major Trauma Centres in the country, this is a really important step forward for our Trust and the population we serve.
