Once a week Not Alone hosts a support group for those who identify as transgender, non-binary, or any other non-conforming gender. The aim is to create a safe and welcome space for everyone regardless of their identity, as well as for friends, parents and allies of what can be a quite vulnerable community.
At every meeting those who attend share stories about the difficulties they face just for being themselves, as well as the joy it brings them when they are able to flourish and explore their gender identity. The group provides an opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences with those living in Plymouth or the surrounding areas.

It won’t come as a surprise to learn that a high proportion of people avoid being open about their gender identity, or adjust how they dress because they fear discrimination or harassment. This naturally has implications for health and wellbeing, and groups such as Not Alone can help by providing peer support and a chance to meet others and feel part of a wider network.
We also aim to increase awareness of trans lives as we are often unaware of our friends and colleagues who identify under the trans umbrella, but there are some very simple ways in which we can support them. Use preferred names, pronouns and gender inclusive language at all times, and show willingness to learn from any mistakes. Respect boundaries and confidentiality, and avoid examining questions or ‘outing’ those who may have shared something personal about themselves with you.
Always be a visible and active ally by supporting inclusivity and diversity whenever the opportunity arises. It’s the diversity of this small and wonderful community that is one of its main strengths, and we are all valid regardless of how we identify.
