Come and meet the Speech and Language Therapy Team to find out about our role within the hospital and the support that we offer to patients.
Speech and Language Therapists provide life-enhancing assessment, treatment and support to adults and their families/carers who have difficulties with communication and/or swallowing. We will be based with our Therapy colleagues in the Physiotherapy Gym on level 7. If you enter from the main entrance on level 6, take the stairs/lifts by Warren’s Bakery and the Physiotherapy Department is on your right-hand side.
Our team work alongside physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, doctors and nurses as part of the multidisciplinary team involved in treatment of adult patients, who might have:
- Oral or pharyngeal dysphagia of an acute, neurological or mechanical nature.
- Communication or swallowing difficulties associated with tracheostomy.
- Speech, language and cognitive communication difficulties due to a neurological disorder (e.g. Parkinson’s disease, dementia, stroke and motor neurone disease).
- Voice problems of an organic, functional or psychological nature.
At the Open Day, we will be providing hands on demonstrations of how we use iPads for patients with communication disorders, videos of the normal and disordered swallow and information on how to become a speech and language therapist.
We will also be attending the Careers Fair in the Discovery Library (level 5) to give a specialist talk about our work and the pathways to becoming a Speech and Language Therapist. The talk will take place between 12:10 and 12:20; the room has limited capacity so we advise that you download our Open Day app to reserve your space (as capacity might become limited on the day).
