Visit Derriford Hospital and you will undoubtedly meet at least one military member of staff. Senior Consultants to junior doctors, specialist nurse practitioners to newly qualified ward nurses, radiographers, RN Medical Assistants and their trainees, the Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit (MDHU) Derriford has always been proud of its partnership with Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust.
During the open day, visitors will be able to catch a glimpse of the other work that MDHU staff perform. Located for the day in the Gymnasium at the Derriford Health and Leisure Centre, there will be a chance to meet and talk to members of both the RN and RAF employed at Derriford.
Recently deployed members of the Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) will be on hand to demonstrate the skills required to provide pre-hospital trauma care, in the back of a helicopter! To go hand in hand with this, you can view the equipment Derriford’s Military Medical and Nursing team often deploy with (some at short notice).
For the more nostalgic, a blast from the past with an old style Nursing Officer and Ward nurse to answer your questions. If you haven’t seen the uniforms, think ITV’s ‘The Royal’, but remember these uniforms only went out of circulation in the last 10 years!
